AND THE WINNER IS...Top 2 and Finale

You've said all the things I was thinking about--can't wait for "Permanent," why didn't they lower the key for Kris, and that "coronation" song was a pile.  (Mine was better.   Maybe next year...)

Don't care who wins.  Love these guys.

But I must say, this was probably the most entertaining finale I've seen in all 8 seasons.

You didn't get the feeling that it was subdued and slightly anti-climactic?  I mean, I'm remembering past seasons final performances, like Clay Aiken's soulful "Bridge Over Troubled Water," complete with a choir, after which Simon nearly crowned him the winner.  Or, how about Fantasia making "I Believe" her own?  Simon's response - "Fantasia, that was your acceptance speech."  Or, consider Bo Bice's "In a Dream" - done completely without music, for a more meaningful impact?  And, let's not forget the Davids' tears - Archie's after "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," and Cook's after "The World I Know."  Those were all moving performances.

I just got the sense that Adam and Kris were tired and really not into it.  Sadly, no one wanted to judge them on that coronation song.  Tsk, tsk, tsk....

That's exactly the feeling I got.  Adam came close to a 'moment' with ACIGC, but other than that, it didn't feel like a finale at all.  It seemed like two really tired guys trying to make it to the end, and judges saying everything they could think of to avoid the Terrible Elephant In The Room--No Boundaries.

Diction was the least of my worries.

Coronation songs are usually cheesy anyway.

This was just not well-written.  It didn't seem to flow.  It wasn't well rounded.  I mean, I can take some superfluous lyrics about rainbows and hurricanes and golden coins falling from the sky, but it can at least showcase some musicality, especially with all the talk about artistry this season.

I'm sorry.  No matter who sings it, I just won't like it.

Amen. It's a terrible song, and extremely unfair to make the guys sing that as something to be judged on. At least the Davids didn't have to sing the Magic Rainbow one last year - only Cook, and after he won. I liked the way they had them choose from the best non-winning songs from the contest - it showed something about their own styles/choices, and nobody knew the songs (not even the judges).

BTW, I don't mind the Magic Rainbow one. Even Cook said it was a good song except that he'd probably have changed some of the lyrics (I believe he said he might go with "magic leprechaun" instead of the rainbow bit Wink).

I never thought I'd wish for the return of the songwriting contest.

An even better idea, as suggested by EW's Michael Slezak, they could have sung "No Boundaries" first because those last two performances deflated the evening.  Now that I think about it, they could have just been dreading that last song.  Even in Season 3, Fantasia and Diana sang the same song, but they switched up the lineup.  Diana sang it as her first song.  Fantasia sang it as her last.

The only thing I look forward to tomorrow night is David Cook.............and, as for last year, they will never repeat it.  It was the best finale ever on this show!  The David's brough comraderie to the show............not seeing it this year.

This show has been overshadowed by so much other junk that I think it has kind of taken some of the joy out of the entire competition.  Last year's group seemed to get along the best.  Even Melinda had such a bond with Jordin and Blake that her leaving didn't seem as bad.  The media has served to create friction where there really is none.  Matt and Kris are best friends, even from Hollywood week, where they shared a group.  Kris and Adam were roommates, forming a great friendship.  Adam spoke of the bond between him and Danny, that can only be formed by sharing such an experience as Idol.  Allison describes all the guys as big brothers - from goofing off with Danny to going to Adam for advice.

Nevertheless, the show bought to much into the good vs bad scenario, with Ryan even introducing them as the Guy Next Door vs Guyliner.  Like Chris Daughtry and David Cook didn't do the eyeliner?

I think Adam better win this thing. I dont want to watch Kris sing that song again.

Well, Ryan did warn us that the show could go over tomorrow night.  Let's hope the coronation song runs into the credits and we only have to hear a few seconds of it, regardless of who sings it.  I just don't see that one being as successful as "Time of My Life."  That was the Olympics montage song, for goodness sakes.  At least it can be used for weddings, anniversaries, graduations, etc.  I don't see "No Boundaries" getting anywhere.  The faithful fans will buy it.

You are so right!  What a horrid song.  Ugh, I feel bad for both Adam and Kris for having to sing that thing in front of so many people.  Kara should be embarrassed!

/sigh

Awww...Adam's nice to a fault.  He said it was a beautiful song.

The coronation song doesn't seem to affect who the winner is going to be.  People, I think, accept the cheesyness of it....reluctantly.

I like cheese.

Cheese is good.

This cheese was moldy.

I don't like moldy cheese.

In the end, the coronation songs need to be let go.  I love the idea of singing the other contestants song.  Great idea!

I also like the idea of the Top 12/13 working on an original song all season, to be debuted at the finale, whichever of the two are remaining.  This, to me, speaks highly of the type of artists he/she will be.  I have David Cook's CD, and "Time of My Life" does not fit into the concept of the transition he was trying to make.

They forced Kris to sing with a higher key, didn't they?

The last song should have been sounded much better for Kris if key was lowered.

Well, as of last Monday, the Top 3 had all recorded the song.  My guess is that if any adjustments needed to be done, it would have happened then.  Then again, we've got Rickey and the band working on a ton of stuff in preparation for the finale.  So, rearranging keys and everything could be a lot of work for the entire band.  Kris also could have simply been hoarse after all of the rehearsing and his first two performances.  It was too high for Adam as well.  That's why he seemed screechy.

Hey Gwen!  I have enjoyed your reviews all season.  These two did a great job.  I am hoping you are correct in your prediction.  IMO, Adam has earned it.  He has 'brought it' every single night and really upped the ante this season.  Hopefully, it will influence the next seasons to come.  Daughtry started the movement of being really creative, Cookie enhanced it more, and Adam has really raised the bar.  TPTB will have to go some to top this!

Okay, no one seems to want to say it, so I will. Kara co-wrote a horrible song that seems suited to one contestant's voice - one who is not competing. That person is Danny Gokey. There was a shocked look on her face last week when Danny was eliminated. Could that be the reason why? Hopefully, whoever sings this as their coronation song will only get better the more they sing it.

I doubt it Gwen, and here's why:

1st step - Any original song is sent to Washington DC to be copyrighted - if there are no problems with the song and assuming they aren't that busy, it can take up to and including 4-6 weeks and maybe longer to receive your copyright numbers for the song(s).

2nd step - After receiving your copyright numbers, the song is then sent to BMI or ASCAP to be registered and approved for Radio Station/TV airplay - depending on how busy they are, that can take up to and including 4-6 weeks as well. (maybe less in some cases)

The Coronation song was probably written before the ( Top 13 ) was even announced. I've read the Danny Gokey (written for him or with him in mind) theory before, and I just want to say: It's not true at all. I do believe, however, it would fit his voice so I can see where you're coming from.

Lets hope for a good finale...!!!
