The Mystery Man Is Revealed!

by The AI Insider

It's that time again, America. In the first live performance of Season 11, the Top 12 guys performed live for your vote. Reed Grimm, Adam Brock, Deandre Brackensick, Colton Dixon, Jeremy Rosado, Aaron Marcellus, Chase Likens, Creighton Fraker, Phillip Phillips, Eben Franckewitz, Heejun Han, and Joshua Ledet took the stage on Tuesday, and the judges agreed that America has some tough decisions to make.

First up was 26-year-old Reed Grimm of Ellsworth, WI, who vowed to "work the crowd and America into a frenzy" with his first live performance. The judges enjoyed his jazzy arrangement of "Moves Like Jagger" (he even played the drums), and agreed that it was a great way to kick off the live shows.

"Yo, man, wow, I'm glad you were bold enough to start off Season 11," Randy said, noting that Reed has "shades of Casey from last season."

Reed's take on the popular song was "a great way to show America what they are dealing with," Jennifer added. "Reed Grimm: he is jazzy, he is musical." Steven agreed, saying, "Tonight there's gonna be a whole new generation watching your [bleep]."

Next, we were reintroduced to 27-year-old family man Adam Brock of Washington, PA, aka "White Chocolate." Adam revealed that he trained to be a chef at Le Cordon Blue, but he feels like a "jack of all trades, master of none." He also thinks that there's a "large black woman trapped in my body." Brock performed Aretha Franklin's "Think," and Steven called it "brilliant." Jennifer loved the "big finish," and Randy admired "the whole throwback thing you have going on." However, Steven said that he prefers "dark chocolate."

Third in the lineup was 17-year-old "ladykiller" Deandre Brackensick of San Jose, CA. Deandre sang Earth Wind & Fire's "Reasons," and the girls in the audience were shrieking over his romantic falsetto.

"Yes, I understand," Jennifer said to the crowd. She told Deandre, "Your voice is so perfect to me! Deandre didn't make Top 24 last year; I was praying he would come back and he did." Randy added that he is "one of the most commercial guys I've seen in 11 seasons."

Colton Dixon, 20, from Murfreesboro, TN, survived this season after his sister was cut (and after he failed to make the Top 24 last year). Colton decided to "change it up" by singing Paramour's "Decode" and climbing on top of the piano.

"Yo, Colton, you almost made it last year; I'm happy you came back," Randy said. "It's about time we on Idol had our own little indie alt-rock-singing Paramour dude."

Jennifer said that she loved how Colton sings from his heart, and she and Steven both agreed that he is a "relevant" artist. "I can hear you on the radio right now," she said.

Jeremy Rosado — the 19-year-old teddy bear ("Jer Bear") who works in an infectious disease office in Valrico, FL — melted the judges' hearts with Sara Bareilles' "Gravity."

"Jeremy, man, that was beautiful," Steven said. "You couldn't have picked a better song. You should be America's idol for your big heart."  Jennifer added that Jeremy is one of those people who are "blessed from God" with a voice that affects people.

With emotions running high, Steven decided to introduce a little comic relief by poking fun at Jennifer's alleged wardrobe malfunction at last weekend's Oscars. "I'm as confused as a baby in a topless bar," he said, before sneezing and revealing his chest as part of an "Oscar reenactment." Laughing, Jennifer begged Ryan to come to her rescue. "There was no nipple!" she insisted.

Back to the competition: Aaron Marcellus, the 27-year-old from Atlanta, GA, performed the Jackson 5's "Never Can Say Goodbye" and earned a standing ovation from the judges. "The run near the end was crazy," Randy said. Steven agreed that Aaron is "the whole package . . . you raised the bar for yourself."

Handsome Chase Likens, a 21-year-old from Point Pleasant, WV, is "as country as any country boy can be," he said. Chase performed Hunter Hayes' "Storm Warning," and the judges were impressed.

"Welcome to American Idol, cowboy," Steven said, adding, "You have kind of Brendan Fraser 'The Mummy' look about you." Jennifer agreed that Chase has "movie-star good looks," but she added that he "sounded great as well."

Creighton Fraker, the 28-year-old who lives in Queens, NY, grew up as a preacher's kid in South Dakota but moved to New York to better express his artsy spirit. In other words, Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" was the perfect song choice for him. "That was so beautiful," Jennifer said. "America's got their work cut out for them." Steven added that Cyndi Lauper was "home crying along with J-Lo."

Pawnshop worker Phillip Phillips, the 21-year-old from Leesburg, GA, said that he wants to make music and "doesn't want to be famous just for fame." Phillip sang a sexy version of Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight," and Jennifer raved, "Y'all know that name Phillip Phillips? You should know that name. There's no doubt that you are one of the most special talents we found on the road." Randy was a fan of Phillip's Dave Matthews vibe, but "wasn't jumping up and down about the re-harm of the melody."

Young Eben Franckewitz — the 15-year-old from Loveland, OH — put his silly personality aside to sing Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain." Randy admired how he was so "calm, cool, and collected" at such a young age, despite "a couple of little flat notes." Jennifer agreed that "the middle was a little unsure, but you really held on," and Steven suggested that he listen to some blues records.

Next, we heard the first live performance from 22-year-old Heejun Han of Flushing, NY, and also met his hilarious mom. "My mom loves to dance and loves to sing, but she's not good at all," Heejun explained. "Tonight I'm gonna show the world that Asian people can not only get a high score on the SAT, they can also sing and melt their hearts." Heejun sang "Angels," and while Jennifer described his voice as "smooth as silk," she wasn't sure "that song showed off how beautiful your voice is." Steven agreed but said that he "still loves" Heejun's voice. Randy felt the same, calling him a "mad talented guy." Randy added, "I'm so happy we found Heejun."

Last up in the initial Top 12, we heard from 19-year-old Joshua Ledet of Westlake, LA, nicknamed "Mantasia" by his fans. Joshua sang Jennifer Hudson's "You Pulled Me Through," earning the second standing ovation of the night.

"Can I get an 'amen' up in here! This is what singing is about," Randy shouted. "You are just amazing . . . I want to punch you!" Jennifer joked. And Steven agreed that Joshua has "the voice the world's been waiting to hear."

But wait — which contestant was invited back to turn the Top 12 semi-finalist guys into the Top 13? Gentle giant Jermaine Jones, a 25-year-old from Pine Hill, NJ, proved to the judges why they decided to give him a second chance. With his performance of Luther Vandross' "Dance With My Father," Jermaine earned the third standing ovation of the night.

"We haven't a bass voice, a low baritone, ever on this show. Congrats!" Randy told Jermaine. "You have a special voice and a special spirit," Jennifer added. "I'm glad America got to see you tonight."

Only the five guys with the highest number of votes will be safe on Thursday night. But first, on Wednesday, we hear from the Top 12 girls!
