And Your Top 13 Are...
by The AI Insider
America, you have your Top 13! After more than 33 million votes were counted, America chose five guys and five girls to be in the Top 10. Then the judges announced the three wild card picks. So who made the massive cut?
First, the judges called Chase Likens, Phillip Phillips, and Jeremy Rosado. "It's beyond belief how nervous we all are right now," Chase said.
Idol music mentor Jimmy Iovine then weighed in on each of the semi-finalists' performances. Jennifer and Steven loved Jeremy's rendition of "Gravity," but Jimmy wasn't as impressed. "Jeremy has a great voice and wins the award for the nicest person I've seen in a long time, but that's not gonna cut it on this show."
Steven compared handsome country boy Chase Likens to "The Mummy" star Brendan Fraser, and he said he would "set America's hearts on fire — a lot of mummies at home." But that wasn't enough for Jimmy. "He's a good-looking guy, but there are plenty of those on TV right now. To win on this show, you have to bring something fresh, original, exciting, and I saw none of that."
As for Phillip Phillips, described by Jennifer as "one of the most special talents we found on the road," Jimmy couldn't agree more. "We desperately need originality on this show. Phillip Phillips has that. I'd sign this guy on the spot."
So what did America think? After a nationwide vote, Ryan revealed that while Jeremy and Chase did not make the Top 10, Phillip did.
Next up were Jessica Sanchez, Hollie Cavanagh, Brielle Von Hugel, and Hallie Day. Jennifer said that she thinks Hollie can win the whole thing, and Jimmy agreed, saying, "She's a little girl with a big voice . . . she could have been a little bit more believable, but give her the right material, and she can do some real damage."
As for Brielle, the judges' loved her "eat up the stage" performance skills, and so did Jimmy. "There's a lot charisma in this girl. I agree with Jennifer: she's a real entertainer. But why pick '(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay'? Why not pick something young, contemporary, and hip? I think it's gonna hurt her," Jimmy said.
Jennifer noted that Hallie Day looked and sounded like a star, and Jimmy agreed that it was "her best show so far." However, he added, "There are a lot of blondes on this show. I'm not sure who the audience is gonna vote for; it may not be her."
Randy declared that 16-year-old Jessica was one of the best of the last two nights, and Jimmy agreed. "She has talent from A to Z. I'd sign her on the spot tonight," he said. "She's the one to beat." Then Ryan announced that after a nationwide vote, Brielle and Hallie are not in the Top 10, but Jessica and Hollie are.
Next up were Joshua Ledet, Heejun Han, and Adam Brock. Steven described Joshua as "the voice the world's been waiting to hear," and Jennifer wanted to punch him because he was so good. What did Jimmy think? "He's the real deal. There's no question he's gonna get through, but if he does get through, my job to make sure we don't turn this into 'Sister Act 3.'"
The judges got a kick out of "White Chocolate" Adam Brock, but Jimmy was a bit confused by his assertion that's he got a large black woman trapped in a white man's body. "He's got to merge them and come as one person," Jimmy said. He was also confused by hilarious Heejun Han. "I get the personality, I get the shtick, but this isn't American Comedian — this is American Idol." After a nationwide vote, Joshua and Heejun were in the Top 10, but Adam was not.
The guys were followed by four of the girls: Shannon Magrane, Skylar Laine, Baylie Brown, and Chelsea Sorrell. The judges got a kick out of spunky country girl Skylar and so did Jimmy, who said, "Skylar did herself a great turn this week by picking that great Faces song. I would have voted for her. I think a lot of the country will, too."
As for beautiful Baylie Brown, Jimmy agreed with the judges that "all the pieces didn't come together. I believe she's out of here." And he wasn't sure that Chelsea Sorrell was original enough. "Carrie Underwood karaoke is not gonna fly," he said. Shannon, who is only 16, gave Jennifer "goosies," and Jimmy really liked her. "She sang beautifully, but dressed more for the prom than for a live performance."
So who made the cut after the lights were dimmed? Shannon and Skylar were safe, but Baylie and Chelsea were not in the Top 10.
Then, it was time for Aaron Marcellus, Creighton Fraker, and Reed Grimm to learn their fates. Jimmy agreed with the judges that Reed is "real talented," but said he was "way too kitschy for me, too cabaret." And Jimmy thought that the judges really overpraised Aaron by giving him a standing ovation. "I'm watching and saying, 'This is cheesy' . . . it did not work for me." Jimmy also disagreed with the judges about Creighton. "He annoyed me. The judges loved him. I didn't."
After a nationwide vote, Ryan revealed that Aaron and Creighton were not in the Top 10. Then Ryan announced that neither was Reed.
Next up in the hot seat: Elise Testone, Erika Van Pelt, Haley Johnsen, and Jen Hirsh. Randy said that Jen is "one of the greatest singers in this competition," but Jimmy said the contestants should "stay miles away from Adele . . . there are too many Adele wannabes."
Jennifer called Erika "one of our power voices," but she argued that she could have gone even further. Jimmy disagreed. "I like this girl — she has music in her blood and great restraint."
Randy described Haley Johnson's performance of "Sweet Dreams" as "a bit of a nightmare," and Jimmy was equally unimpressed, saying, "She sang out of tune the entire time."
Randy called Elise "a force to be reckoned with in this competition," and Jimmy backed away from his earlier Adele warning. "I'm normally afraid of Adele songs, but she brought something to it," he said.
With one more spot for the girls in the Top 10, Ryan announced that Haley, Erika, and Jen did NOT make the cut, but Elise did.
Finally, the last four contestants — Deandre Brackensick, Eben Franckewitz, Colton Dixon, and Jermaine Jones — took center stage, with only two stools left to fill. Jimmy said he is so glad that they brought Jermaine back into the Top 25, saying, "I could listen to a whole album with that voice." As for Deandre, he thinks he has "enormous potential," but needs a coach. Eben also has "great potential," but Jimmy felt that he's "not ready for prime time yet." Indie rocker Colton Dixon has a better shot, according to Jimmy. "He's really talented, probably one of the most talented kids in this show. He could win this thing," Jimmy said.
After a nationwide vote, Deandre and Eben were not in the Top 10, but Colton and Jermaine made it. But it wasn't over yet. The judges then invited six contestants to "sing for their lives" to compete for the three remaining wild card spots: Jen Hirsh, Jeremy Rosado, Brielle Von Hugel, Deandre Brackensick, Erika Van Pelt, and Reed Grimm.
Jen sang "Oh! Darling," and Randy admired her "big old pipes." Jeremy sang Carrie Underwood's "I Know You Won't," and he and Jennifer both broke down in tears at the end. "I may not have been able to show you guys on Tuesday what I can do, but I promise you if you do this for me you wont regret it," Jeremy vowed.
Next, Brielle sang Adele's "Someone Like You," and Randy said it "wasn't great." Deandre performed "Georgia on My Mind," and received a standing ovation from the audience. Erika belted out Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory," and Steven said it was "outta the park." Finally, Reed Grimm scatted to Bill Withers' "Use Me."
Each judge was allowed to make one wild card selection. Randy selected Erika, Jennifer chose Jeremy (who dropped to his knees and ran out to hug her), and Steven picked Deandre, rounding out the Top 13! Next week, the guys sing Stevie Wonder songs as the ladies pay tribute to Whitney Houston, and they'll all be mentored by Mary J. Blige.
