The Champ Returns
by The AI Insider
They just moved into the Hollywood Hills mansion, but one contestant is already moving out.
But first, your results: After Steven Tyler announced that Aerosmith is going on tour, Ryan called Elise Testone, Phillip Phillips, and Hollie Cavanagh to center stage to hear the results of America's vote.
On Wednesday, Elise sang Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love," and Steven said she "made Robert Plant proud." Randy was amazed by how well she performed the "hardest song in the world," and Jimmy loved it, too. "She took charge of the stage," he said. "The hair, the clothes, the vocal ability all moved in unison. She was a dark horse, but not anymore."
Phillip sang Jonny Lang's "Still Rainin'," and Steven thought he "owned it." Jimmy noted that Stevie Nicks is a big fan, adding, "Whenever she likes someone as much as she likes Phillip Phillips, she's very rarely wrong." Jimmy predicted that we could be "witnessing a big, big star being born here."
Hollie sang Carrie Underwood's "Jesus, Take the Wheel," and Randy noticed a "couple of pitchy moments." Jennifer, however, thought it was one of her best, because Hollie connected with the song. Jimmy said that Hollie sounded beautiful but lacks experience. "Technically she's right, [but] emotionally she's behind the pack," he said.
Dim the lights . . . after a nationwide vote, Ryan announced that Hollie was in the bottom three, and Phillip and Elise were safe.
The contestants relaxed while Nicki Minaj gave a colorful performance of her song "Starships" (she wants to come back as a guest judge!), and then it was time for Colton Dixon, Joshua Ledet, and Heejun Han to take center stage.
On Wednesday, Colton sang Lifehouse's "Everything," and Steven said that Colton knows how to "sing a song like it should be sung." Randy felt his "heart" and his "passion," and said that he could be "looking at a contender for the title." But Jimmy thought that Colton was "good, but not good enough," compared to the other contestants who were equally emotional but "held their poise."
Joshua sang Mariah Carey's version of "Without You," which Randy described as "flawless." Jennifer called Joshua an "an absolute angel from heaven — that voice is just God-sent." Jimmy said Joshua "delivered 85 percent," but "when he got emotional, he lost it."
Heejun had followed a rough week by singing "A Song for You" by Donny Hathaway, and Steven said he "turned it around." Jennifer reminded Heejun that he "moves people," and Randy said that "the Heejun we selected came back to us." Jimmy said that he enjoyed Heejun's "comeback," but he didn't think it would be enough. "I don't think he sings as well as other eight contestants at this point in the show," he said.
Dim the lights . . . after a nationwide vote, Colton and Joshua were safe, but Heejun was in the bottom three.
Next up, we heard from last year's Idol, Scotty McCreery, who has since become the youngest male performer to have a debut album at #1 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. Scotty sang his new single, "Water Tower Town," and Jimmy presented him with an honorary plaque for his platinum album.
Finally, Ryan called Skylar Laine, DeAndre Brackensick, and Jessica Sanchez to center stage.
Skylar sang "Gunpowder and Lead," and Jennifer admired her "unbridled energy." Randy said that he "hadn't seen a country singer in a long time, other than maybe Carrie Underwood, with that kind of range," but Jimmy said Skylar should have picked "a song with real melody" rather than a "character song." He predicted she would be in the "middle of the pack."
DeAndre sang Eric Benet's "Sometimes I Cry," and Steven said that he "gave Prince a run for his money." Jennifer said he "has one of the most special voices in the competition." However, Jimmy said that he wasn't "going crazy" for DeAndre, but he wasn't disliking him either, noting that his falsetto could be "polarizing."
Jessica Sanchez sang Beyonce's "Sweet Dreams," and Steven called it "delicious." Jennifer wanted even more, and Randy called her "one of the best singers I've heard in many years." Jimmy admired Jessica's beyond-her-years maturity, and how well she kept her composure. While girls have been voting for guys in recent years, Jimmy said that this season, he's hoping for "a little girl power."
After a nationwide vote . . . Jessica and DeAndre were safe, but Skylar joined Hollie and Heejun in the bottom three. Skylar was quickly sent to safety, followed by Hollie, and Heejun was the last man standing.
Heejun sang for his life, reprising his performance of "A Song for You," but the judges chose to not use their one save of the season on him.
"Heejun, you knew this was coming yourself," Steven told him. "You took it up a couple of notches . . . unfortunately, we're gonna have to let you go." As Ryan put it, Heejun's "spirit" will be missed.
